5 Steps to Cut Lighting Energy in Commercial Buildings

5 Steps to Cut Lighting Energy in Commercial Buildings

Lighting is a major share of electricity use in offices, hotels and retail spaces, and much of that waste can be avoided with a well-designed control system.

The five steps

  1. Occupancy and absence sensing: corridors, meeting rooms and washrooms switch off automatically when empty.
  2. Daylight harvesting: fixtures near windows dim automatically as daylight increases, which is especially valuable in our sunny climate.
  3. Time schedules and scenes: separate profiles for working hours, after hours and weekends.
  4. Smart zoning: each area is lit according to how it is actually used, instead of one switch per floor.
  5. BMS integration: monitor consumption, catch faults early and produce energy reports.

Don't skip commissioning

None of this pays off fully without careful commissioning at handover, and a settings review after a few months of real occupancy.

At GLTS, we design lighting control on KNX and DALI and integrate it with building management systems.
